Kansas
Although cougars were part of the state’s native fauna, they were essentially extirpated during the second half of the 19th century. The last recorded cougar was killed in Ellis County in 1904. Cougars are officially classified as extinct in the state of Kansas.
Since 2007, there have been 10 verified mountain lion sightings, with the most recent occurring in the fall of 2014. These animals appear to be dispersers from neighboring states – there is no established breeding population of cougars in Kansas.
